Teeth Whitening

Over time, our teeth will become stained because of drinking coffee or tea, drinking red wine, smoking, and taking certain medications. Aging also causes our teeth to become dull while some people are simply predisposed to yellow teeth due to their genes.

The problem is that having stained teeth can make people look unattractive. It can hurt their self-esteem. People with discolored teeth are often afraid to smile for fear of embarrassment.

If you have stained teeth, you should consider teeth whitening. Whitening or bleaching is a cosmetic dental treatment used to whiten the tooth enamel. It often involves the use of peroxide gel that is added to a tray which will then be placed inside the mouth.

Teeth Whitening Options

Whitening can be done at home or in-office, and here in our clinic we offer both. Dr. Reilly can recommend the appropriate solution for you depending on the type of teeth stain or discoloration you have. For example, if you have stained teeth caused by certain drugs like tetracycline, we may recommend an in-office deep whitening treatment.

At-Home Whitening

Our at-home teeth whitening kit is the more cost-effective option. The kit includes a custom mouth guard and 10% carbamide peroxide solution. You’ll need to insert the tray in your mouth and wear it for the prescribed duration. Application usually takes 10-15 minutes at a time.

Once you have achieved the desired outcome, you can stop using the tray. But you may want a touch up 1-2x a year to keep your teeth white and bright.

In-Office Whitening

For patients with severe teeth discoloration caused by medication, the best solution may be in-office whitening. Dr. Reilly will apply a protective cream over your gums and soft tissue prior to applying the whitening gel. Once the gel is applied, we will use a laser beam to accelerate the whitening process. In-office whitening may require more than one visit to our office depending on the degree of discoloration.
