We want our patients to feel confident with their smile so if you are missing a tooth or two, we can recommend some options to bring back your natural smile and prevent any oral health problems in the future. In our clinic, there are a few treatment options you can choose from and these include crowns and bridges.
A crown is a cap that is shaped like a tooth and it is bonded to an existing tooth structure. Dr. Reilly fabricates them in our office and these crowns are then permanently bonded to the tooth in just one visit.
Crowns are used to:
- Replace a damaged, missing or worn tooth structure
- Strengthen and protect the tooth
- Improve the appearance of the tooth (if it’s discolored or poorly shaped)
- Restore fractured teeth
- Cover a dental implant
- Cover a tooth that underwent a root canal
Most crowns are made from either porcelain, gold, zirconium or a combination of gold and porcelain. Porcelain crowns are the popular choice because they look very natural.
The purpose of a bridge is to basically bridge the gap between missing teeth. In a way, it occupies the space where there is a missing tooth or two. This is important to prevent teeth on either side from moving. Movement of teeth can cause gaps which can lead to food impaction. Food stuck in these gaps is difficult to remove even with brushing. This leads to tooth decay, gum problems, and ultimately, tooth loss.
Bridges, just like crowns, are permanent prosthetic devices that the dentist will attach to dental implants or natural teeth. Fixed bridges can also be an alternative to dental implants.
